Marvel, in association with Fox studios, has confirmed a movie on comic book superhero Gambit by next year, with the lead character portrayed by actor Channing Tatum.

Months following unconfirmed reports about such a movie, Marvel finally set the record straight that Tatum will indeed be playing the Ragin' Cajun, or Gambit, in a solo film, the Variety reports.

But neither Marvel nor Fox confirmed whether screenwriter Joshua Zetumer, who is responsible for penning last year's RoboCop reboot, would also be tapped for the superhero movie.

Tatum, the "21 Jump Street" star, on Monday shared the film's official release date, tweeting "How do you say October 7th, 2016 in Cajun?"

In an interview last year, Tatum disclosed his plans on how he planned to portray the character on the big screen.

"Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking guy. He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He's a thief. He kind of rode the line," Tatum said, according to Consequence of Sound.

"We're obviously going to go to the saving-the-world superhero movies eventually, but maybe not for the first one. We kind of want to introduce this character in a very different way," Tatum added.

Marvel also failed to address rumors that Tatum would appear as Gambit in a brief cameo in the next X-Men movie, "X-Men: Apocalypse," which will hit theaters on May 27, 2016.

Actor Taylor Kitsch previously played Gambit in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" in 2009.

In 1990, the character first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #266, which was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Marc Silvestri.

Gambit is noted for his thick accent, boasting the use of playing cards as an offensive weapon. His mutant powers include charging inanimate objects with explosive kinetic energy.

Marvel showed Gambit as a thief, the character's depiction over the last 25 years that made him as one of the more intriguing entries in the Marvel universe.
