'Frozen 2' Release Date News: Disney Confirms Sequel, But No Premiere Date Yet
Disney can't let "Frozen" go as it has confirmed making a sequel with a brand-new set of tunes in the not-too-distant future to what is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
"Frozen" continues to be a major moneymaking force for Disney since its release last Nov. 203, helping reinvigorate Walt Disney Animation Studios.
"Frozen" generated almost $1.3 billion at the box office and has become a merchandising juggernaut, breaking sales records on home video and at Disney's stores, according to Variety.
Outside of a Broadway show and the animated short "Frozen Fever," Disney has kept its "Frozen" sequel plans quiet, until now.
John Lasseter, chief of creative officer of Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, announced that "Frozen" directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee are developing the film with producer Peter Del Vecho.
"We enjoyed making 'Frozen Fever' so much, and being back in that world with those characters. Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel," Lasseter said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"We're taking you back to Arendelle and we're so excited about that... You'll be hearing a lot more about it," he added.
Lasseter made the announcement with Disney chief Bob Iger, and Josh Gad, who voiced the character of Olaf in "Frozen" during a Disney shareholders meeting on Thursday.
Songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez will also return to flesh out the score for the movie.
A release date and production details have yet to be announced, but reports assumed that it will not come sooner until 2018.
In the meantime, a short film titled "Frozen Fever" will reunite characters from the sensational animation feature, unspooling in front of Disney's live-action adaptation of "Cinderella" in theaters beginning this weekend.
Disney's confirmation came as a series of hints about the sequel came from one of its voice actors, Idina Menzel.
