'Doctor Who' season 10 premiere date, news: Trailer featuring new companion released
Bill (Pearl Mackie), The Doctor (Peter Capaldi)'s new companion, is featured in a new "Doctor Who" trailer.
The teaser seems to portray the character as a fan who is in awe of The Doctor, describing him as "funny," "amazing," and the "most dangerous man in the universe." The threats surrounding them do not seem to intimidate her. On the contrary, Bill seems to enjoy the situation as she said that she is "having the time of her life."
The trailer ends on an ominous note — with her saying that she would not miss the experience of being The Doctor's companion "even if it kills me." Her line might just be a hyperbole, but there might also be something more to this comment, given that this will be Capaldi's last season on the show.
Digital Spy previously reported that Bill personifies coolness, strength, vulnerability, and geekiness, a description given by Mackie herself. The actor appeared in an episode of BBC's "Doctors" and in the indie film "Svengali." She was also in the music video of Years & Years' "Real."
Mackie has already had her first appearance as Bill in a teaser shown during a "Match of the Day" episode. In that trailer, she seems to be new to the world of The Doctor despite being a fan of him, as she was shown to be clueless about the Daleks, interrogating him about these even as the cyborg aliens were attacking them.
Additionally, Nardole (Matt Lucas) will be coming back as the Doctor's butler. He first appeared on the show in the 2015 Christmas special "The Husbands of River Song." Michelle Gomez will also be returning to "Doctor Who" as Missy, The Doctor's nemesis. Joining them is David Suchet, who will play a mysterious character only known as The Landlord.
This upcoming season will also be Steven Moffat's last one as the series showrunner. He will be turning over the show to Chris Chibnail, the creator of "Broadchurch." Chibnail is not a stranger to the show, having written a few "Doctor Who" episodes already.
Regarding Capaldi's replacement, Chibnail said that they will write the script first prior to casting the new Doctor so that they can ensure that the actor who will be cast will fit the storyline. However, a lot of names have been listed as possible options. Some are suggesting that series 11 may be the first time viewers will get to see a female Doctor, which is not unlikely, given that his nemesis' current incarnation is also a woman.
Series 10 of "Doctor Who" will premiere on April 15 on BBC.
