'Descendants of the Sun' season 2 news, updates: What we know so far about 2nd season of Hallyu drama
So much has been said about "Descendants of the Sun" season 2, and while Korean Broadcasting System has confirmed that it will happen, there's no guarantee that Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo will be part of it.
What's certain about the sequel to the much-loved Hallyu drama is its target air date, which is slated for a 2017 broadcast. Some say KBS is looking at April as its target month. However, other details about the series are kept in secret. Until now, the storyline and cast members are all based on fan theories and speculations.
KBS' drama president, Jung Sung0ho, has previously announced that they plan to release "Descendants of the Sun" season 2 sometime next year.
"For the time being, we plan to proceed with a variety of projects with a 2017 broadcast goal," Movie News Guide quotes him as saying to Korean outlet Soompi.
There are reports that the famous Song-Song couple who played lead roles in the original version have declined to take part in the sequel, citing conflicts in their respective schedules. Still, there are rumors that the two met with one of season 2's writers and that it will focus on Captain Yoo Si-jin (Song Joong-ki) and Dr. Kang Mo-yeon's (Song Hye-kyo) family life.
Yes, there are speculations "Descendants of the Sun" season 2 will see the two get married, raise a family, and face many obstacles as they raise their children and carry on with their duties as public servants.
Nevertheless, according to Jung, they are still brainstorming the plot of the sophomore season. It will definitely not follow the plot of the original, since Kim Eun-sook, who wrote the first one, has announced she will not be working on the sequel. She said she has told her story and that's the end of it.
As to why they decided to produce a sequel, Jung said it's their way of paying back viewers who made the series very popular. "Descendants of the Sun" wrapped up in April 2016 with a record-shattering 35.3 percent nationwide viewership.
"The drama was more than a domestic syndrome; it established a third wave of Hallyu," Jung said.
In the meantime, keep coming back for more details and updates about "Descendants of the Sun" season 2.
