'Descendants of the Sun' season 2 news 2016: Jin Goo and Kim Ji-won take over SongSong couple's roles?

The Korean war drama that took the world by storm, "Descendants of the Sun," is expected to return to the small screens, hopefully next year. However, fans of Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo might be in for disappointment.

Back in April, Soompi reported that Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) drama department head Jung Sung has announced plans for "Descendants of the Sun" season 2, something that doesn't necessarily happen. Most Korean dramas typically last one season only, but owing to the huge success of the series, KBS2 apparently decided to give it a new lease on life.

"Descendants of the Sun" gained international fame because of its fresh storyline. It followed the on-screen love story of Captain Yoo Si-jin (Song Joong-ki) and Doctor Kang Mo-yeon (Song Hye-kyo). Nevertheless, there are speculations that since their story had closure, season 2's storyline will not involve the characters anymore.

Soompi's report claimed the producers and the network have yet to finalize season 2's storyline, although there are reports that it will take on a "Criminal Minds" vibe.

"Criminal Minds" is an American crime procedural drama that airs on CBS. The same reports say Song Joong Kin and Song Hye Kyo have declined the project due to their busy schedules. Song Joong Ki is wrapping up work for his film "Battleship Island" while Song Hye Kyo is preparing for a TV series in which she'll star with another popular Korean actor, Lee Min Ho.

If "Descendants of the Sun" season 2 pushes through, fans could expect second lead couple Jin Goo, who played Sergeant Seo Dae-young, and Kim Ji-won, who played Lieutenant Yoon Myung-joo, to take over as lead stars. Moreover, if season 2 will use "Criminal Minds" as its inspiration for the plot, then viewers can expect the military romance of Dae-young and Myung-joo to continue.

In related news, the stars and crew of the first season reunited earlier this month to record their commentaries for the "Descendants of the Sun" DVD. Present during the recording session were Song Joong Ki, Song Hye-kyo, Jin Goo, Kim Ji-won, director Lee Eung-bok, and writers Kim Won-suk and Kim Eun-sook. Aside from the commentaries, the DVD will feature music videos, interviews, bloopers, and unreleased scenes. It is expected to come out in November 2016.

Stay tuned for more updates and news about the possible sequel of "Descendants of the Sun."
