'Dark Souls 3' DLC release date, news & update: 'Ashes of Ariandel' gameplay footage revealed ahead of Oct. 25 release
Bandai Namco released some gameplay footage from "Ashes of Ariandel," the upcoming downloadable content (DLC) for the action role-playing video game "Dark Souls 3."
"Ashes of Ariandel" was officially unveiled in August, but the story for the DLC is still unknown. The new footage gave "Dark Souls" fans their first taste of what the highly anticipated DLC has in store for them.
"Ashen Ones... Enter this new world covered by snow and defeat the evil that has defiled this land," the official description of the trailer read.
According to Bandai Namco, the DLC takes players on a mission to track down a mysterious person in an all-new location that is unlike anything players have seen in the "Dark Souls" franchise.
But while the "Ashes of Ariandel" storyline is still relatively unclear, it has at least been confirmed that the upcoming expansion offers more magic, weapons, enemies and bosses. In the trailer for "Ashes of Ariandel," it was revealed that the new bosses included a giant wolf and a woman who turns into a monster.
Fans who have seen footage from "Ashes of Ariandel" have noted some similarities between the DLC and the Painted World of Ariamis, an optional location in "Dark Souls."
In an interview with Polygon, From Software president Hidetaka Miyazaki explained the resemblance, saying, "It is taking place in the Painted World, but it's taking place in a different Painted World."
"However, there are some connections between this Painted World and the one from the original 'Dark Souls,'" he added. "The reason I decided to return to the Painted World is because it matches with the theme I'm trying to describe in the first DLC. Players should be able to understand the reason as they play the DLC," Miyazaki continued.
"Ashes of Ariandel" is the first of two upcoming DLC packs to be launched for "Dark Souls 3." According to Express UK, the second DLC will arrive in early 2017. Both DLCs are going to be made available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
"Ashes of Ariandel" will launch on Oct. 25.
