'Blade Runner 2049' release date, news: director confirms film will be R-rated
Big-budget films are usually films that appeal to a wide range of people. If the budget is huge, the studio will also expect the film be a box-office success. And the best way to do so is to make the film suitable for an audience of all ages. That's why R-rated films are rarely blockbusters.
But "Deadpool" has been a massive success despite being an R-rated film, and it looks like the people behind "Bladerunner 2049" has decided that they may as well take the risk as well.
In an interview with Screen Daily, director Denis Villeneuve confirmed that the film was going to be R-rated, and it could even be the most expensive one ever made. "My producers are finding it fun to remind me that it will be one of the most expensive R-rated independent feature films ever made," he stated.
Villeneuve also talked about how he tried to keep the computer-generated imagery (CGI) at a minimum. "My actors were not walking on green screens all day long. CGI is a strong tool for backgrounds and extensions but what is around the actors needs to be as real as possible. When I watch a movie that's mostly CGI, I'm disengaged," he said.
The editing process has just started, but Villeneuve may already have plans for future installments set in the world of "Blade Runner." "I'm doomed, I love sci-fi. I have two more ideas now that I would love to do. [And] Blade Runner could go on ... we'll see how this one goes," he revealed.
"Bladerunner 2049" is scheduled to premiere on Oct. 6, 2017. Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Rick Deckard, and the film will also star Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Ana de Armas, and Robin Wright. "Bladerunner 2049" is set 30 years after the first film, and Gosling will be playing a new blade runner named K.
