'Black Panther' release date and news: 'Walking Dead' actress Danai Gurira talks about movie's significance
Audiences will remember Danai Gurira for her role as Michonne in Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead" but she will also be playing one of T'Challa's (Chadwick Boseman) bodyguards in the upcoming film "Black Panther." She talked about the significance of the movie and how "Black Panther" will be able to represent the minority group in the superhero movie genre.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gurira spoke about the movie and said, "I grew up seeing a lot of superheroes and they didn't look like me and they certainly weren't in Africa... I think that it is something great for girls who are like me growing up. Growing up in Africa, we were looking for images we couldn't always find."
She will be playing the role of Okoye, who is also the head of T'Challa's bodyguards. Hopefully she will bring some of her action chops from "The Walking Dead" to the country of Wakanda.
A lot of fans were happy with Boseman's performance when Black Panther was introduced in "Captain America: Civil War." His solo movie would be the first outing of a black superhero in the Marvel Universe.
Another black hero has been introduced to the audience when Wesley Snipes played the role of vampire hunter Blade. But with an all new universe, viewers are ready for a new black hero to grace the screens.
Then again, T'Challa won't be the first black hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Audiences have already met Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and James Rhodes aka War Machine (Don Cheadle). "Black Panther" will be the first movie, however, where an African-American actor takes the lead role.
In other news, the Russo brothers, who directed Boseman in "Civil War," say that the ring that he got from his father may have some special powers that would be showcased in his solo movie.
So what does the ring really do? Fans will just have to wait till "Black Panther" hits theaters on July 6, 2018, to find out.
