'Black Panther' release date and news: 'Star Wars' actor Forest Whitaker cast in the Marvel movie
Marvel Studios' "Black Panther" may be more than a year away but cast news for the movie has been making its rounds online. The latest reports say that Forest Whitaker from "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" has been cast in the upcoming Marvel movie.
The news was reported by Variety, and the outlet says that Whitaker has been cast as Zuri, one of the elder councilmen of Wakanda. In the comics, Zuri was also one of the elderly advisers of T'Challa. He was also a friend of Thor but he was killed by the supervillain Morlun.
Screencrush is considering Whitaker's recent roles to be some sort of career renaissance as he had been cast in some low-budget movies like "Catch .44" and "Freelancers." This is a far cry from his portrayal of Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland."
It looks like the movie will be hosting a lot of original characters from the "Black Panther" comics. Just recently, the movie also cast "Person of Interest" actor Winston Duke in the role of M'Baku, otherwise known to comic fans as Man-Ape.
M'Baku is the leader of an opposing tribe in Wakanda, but it's unsure how much involvement his character will have in the film. The main villains for now are considered to be Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger and Andy Serkis' Ulysses Klaue. If Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 3" has taught comic book film adaptations something, it's that movies with more than two main villains can lead to a mess.
"Black Panther" will be the first Marvel movie to focus on a black superhero. The lead role of T'Challa aka The Black Panther will be played by Chadwick Boseman. He will be joined by Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o and Danai Gurira.
"Black Panther" premieres on Feb. 16, 2018.
