'Beauty and the Beast' news: Emma Watson's Belle also an empowered woman, inventor like her father

Aside from her love for books and for her father in the upcoming Disney film "Beauty and the Beast," Belle, played by "Harry Potter" actress Emma Watson, will have one peculiar trait that sets her apart from the rest of the village girls. Watson, who is a known feminist, takes on a character who embodies her values.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly for Disney's live adaptation, the actress revealed that the character's back story is pretty limited. Hence, they decided to add something new to the classic tale.

"In the animated movie, it's her father who is the inventor, and we actually co-opted that for Belle," said Watson.

"We created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor," she added.

Maurice, Belle's father, portrayed by Kevin Kline. To prevent his daughter from chasing her wild dreams of traveling to a faraway land, the inventor created multiple music boxes hoping that her daughter won't feel the need to go somewhere distant.

According to the set decorator Katie Spencer, they created music boxes that represent various countries, so instead of traveling, she can see all that she's missing from her small town.

Watson and Luke Evans, who portrays the vain villain Gaston, shared the most recent poster for "Beauty and the Beast" on their Twitter pages.

Evans captioned the photo, "A tale as old as time...World premiere of the #BeautyAndTheBeast trailer coming tomorrow on @GMA #BeOurGuest."

"Beauty and the Beast" will hit the big screens on March 17, 2017.
