Young gamers may not be able to get their hands on the upcoming game "Batman: Arkham Knight" after it received an "M for Mature" rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board, IGN reported on Tuesday.

The game is set to be released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms on June 2 this year.

The caped crusader game – the last in a series – was tagged with "Blood, Language, Suggestive Themes, Violence" by the Board.

Its predecessors "Arkham Asylum" and "Arkham City" both received a "T for Teen" rating.

Sefton Hill, founder of Rocksteady and game director on "Arkham Knight," said the "M" rating of the game came as a surprise as it was never really the goal of the team.

"From our point of view, we never wrote it or made it with a rating in mind. We never did that in the previous two games... We just felt that this is the story that we really wanted to tell," IGN quoted Hill as saying.

He said the company is aware that the game may not be accessible to younger players because of its ratings. However, watering down the game for the sake of the "mass market" would have affected the story of "Arkham Knight."

"I'm not blind to the fact that [the M rating] does mean some fans will miss out... I don't want to be oblivious to that fact. It would have been wrong to water down the game and deliver a story we didn't believe in to keep the game 'mass market' or enable it for more people. We feel that's the wrong way to go about it. We said we love the story and we don't want to jeopardize that."

In "Batman: Arkham Knight," Scarecrow returns to unite a group of super villains, including Penguin, Two-Face and Harley Quinn, Rocksteady said in the game's description.

For the first time in the franchise, players will be allowed to control Rocksteady's uniquely designed version of the Batmobile.
