'Avatar 2' release date, cast news 2016: Sigourney Weaver says sequel may not come out on time
Fans were elated when 20th Century Fox inadvertently revealed "Avatar 2's" official release date after it reshuffled its release schedules. Will the film finally come out on Dec. 21, 2018? Does this mean director James Cameron is going to do whatever it takes to finish the film before the release date? Fans are hoping that he can do it, but one returning actress does not think that it is possible.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sigourney Weaver, the actress who portrayed Dr. Grace Augustine in "Avatar," stated that the 2018 release date set by the studio might be too ambitious. "We haven't started it, so I don't know how realistic that date is."
So, why is it taking Cameron so long to make the sequel? "Avatar" came out back in 2009, that means the director should have more than enough time to work on the sequels, right? While doing an interview for her new movie "The Monster Calls," Weaver told Coming Soon that Cameron has not been sitting idle the past few years.
She said the director has been experimenting with the technology for the sequel films and he has been busy laying the groundwork. However, Weaver wasn't sure if any of Cameron's experiments were going to make it into the film.
"I don't know if any of that would end up in the movie 'cause it's not actually any of the story, but I'm sure he's trying to figure out how to photograph an animal in this situation, things like that, so on the day he doesn't have to waste time finding that out."
Since they are going to film all four sequels simultaneously, Cameron just wants to make sure that they have done their homework before production starts so there will be no further delays. The director has also been talking about glass-free 3D for the sequels. If he can pull that off, it would be an amazing experience for moviegoers.
