Audi Q8 release date, specs news: Concept vehicle to preview future luxury SUV at Detroit Auto Show 2017
Audi is slated to unveil the Q8 concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in January 2017. The vehicle is said to be a near-production example that previews the German automobile manufacturer's future luxury sports utility vehicle (SUV).
"With the Audi Q8 concept, we have created a new spearhead within our Q model line. Its design strongly evokes sportiness and prestige. What's more, we believe an important aspect of this showcar is that it offers a spacious interior with four equally comfortable seats, even with the flat roof line," said Marc Lichte, Audi's head of design.
Based on the teaser image, the Q8 concept will have an elegant coupe-like design but with SUV dimensions. It has an aggressive front fascia with an imposing stance and features the automaker's signature octagonal Singleframe grille, which is wider compared to current production models. The Q8 concept's design elements were inspired by the Audi Ur-Quattro, introduced in the 1980s, which had a flat and wide C-post and prominent and flared shoulders. The Q8 concept has balanced proportions that highlight the front and rear wheels, which is expected given the Quattro four-wheel-drive system.
According to AutoExpress, the Audi Q8 will be built using the same platform architecture as the current Q7 but will be 70 mm lower and feature a shorter rear overhang. Given that this platform affords the Q7 seating for up to seven passengers, the Q8 will indeed provide comfortable interiors with only four seats.
The production version of the Audi Q8 concept is expected to arrive in 2018. It is said to receive electric turbo engines as well as full plug-in hybrid variants. It will also come with the company's latest autonomous driving technologies. The Q8 alongside the A8 four-door sedan are slated to be Audi's luxury flagship vehicles.
NAIAS, also known as the Detroit Auto Show, will take place from Jan. 7 to 22, 2017. More details about the upcoming auto show can be seen here.
