'Aquaman' release date and news: Production begins later this month
Next year will see the release of two DC movies, "Wonder Woman" and "Justice League." Though sights are set for the release of these films, the "Aquaman" crew is already catching up steam with its production.
According to Gold Coast Bulletin, "Aquaman" is set to start pre-production later this month. The lead star of the film, Jason Momoa of "Game of Thrones," has just finished work on "Justice League," so he now has the time to put energy into his own solo movie.
The production will be taking place in Queensland, Australia. Marvel fans can remember that the upcoming "Thor: Ragnarok" was also shot here, so as of now, the "Aquaman" production team has to wait for the massive sets of "Thor" to be dismantled so they can start working.
As of now, fans are more focused on the release of the movies next year, as these will determine the direction that "Aquaman" will follow. As of now, DC has three movies under its cinematic universe ("Man of Steel," "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," and "Suicide Squad"), but none of them have been able to be a solid critical success. The burden of success is left on "Wonder Woman" and "Justice League" as the two films are pressured to finally give DC the homerun movie that it desperately needs.
So far, only three names have been included in the cast list for the movie. These are Jason Momoa (Aquaman aka Arthur Curry), Amber Heard (Mera) and Willem Dafoe (role unknown). Fans should expect the list to expand as the production goes on.
"Aquaman" will be directed by James Wan ("The Conjuring" and "Furious 7") and it will focus on DC's King of the Seven Seas, Arthur Curry aka Aquaman.
The movie is set to come out on July 27, 2018. Stay tuned for more updates.
