Apple Watch 2 release date, specs rumors 2016: Smartwatch out later this year with GPS, barometer; Original watch getting upgrade too
The Apple Watch 2 will be released later this year, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a reputable track record when it comes to Apple releases.
In his latest note to investors picked up by Apple Insider, Kuo claimed that Apple is preparing two smartwatches. One of which is dubbed the Apple Watch 2.
The analyst claimed that the wearable will feature a GPS radio and a barometer for improved geolocation. Design-wise, the Apple Watch 2 will not be thinner, but for a good thing.
The second-generation smartwatch from Apple is expected to come with a bigger battery to accommodate the higher-powered components and features. The display size will be the same.
Forbes says, referencing to a previous DigiTimes report, that the bigger battery might be achieved through One Glass Solution (OGS), a new touch panel technology that allows manufacturers to slim down the display and save room for more components.
In this case, if Apple were to pack a larger and higher capacity battery for the Apple Watch 2 while keeping its size, the OGS tech might be the way to go.
One thing that will be missing from the Apple Watch 2 , as per Kuo, is LTE connectivity. The esteemed analyst does not see an Apple smartwatch with that capability releasing until 2018.
The second smartwatch Apple is launching is an update to the current Apple Watch. As such, it will come with the same design and aesthetics.
The improvements will include a TSMC processor manufactured on a 16nm process, which should drastically improve the performance of the device. Improved waterproofing is reportedly on the cards as well.
With regards to specific release date, Kuo did not offer information on that, but he assured that the Apple Watch 2 and the original Apple Watch upgrade will see the light of day before the year wraps up.
