Android 7.1.1 update release date, features update: Google devices to get OTA software update; Sony to follow suit
The latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat build is finally out and as expected, Google devices such as the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 9, Nexus Player and General Mobile 4G (Android One) will be the first ones to get the update. The latest update is available as a free download over the air (OTA). Consumers who are planning to return their Nexus and Pixel devices to their original factory state before updating may access the factory images on this site.
Since the source code is now available to manufacturers, Sony is also going to act fast and someone from the company's development team told Xperia Blog that updating the company's android devices to Android 7.1.1 Nougat is their top priority. "If you spot any other vendor (excluding Google) releasing this faster than us, prepare your rotten tomatoes!" the source stated. It should be noted that Sony has yet to confirm their plans, so readers are advised to take this with a pinch of salt as of the moment.
So, what can Android users expect from the Android 7.1.1 Nougat? Besides getting more emoji options, consumers can now send Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) images directly from their keyboard on apps such as Google Hangouts, Google Messenger and Google Allo.
The update also introduces app shortcuts on the home screen. Android users can just long press an app icon and they will get a list of actions to choose from. Users can create up to five shortcuts with this feature.
Pixel and Pixel XL owners will also get to use a new "Moves" menu that allows them to launch a number of options. To launch the camera, simply press the power button twice. It also gives users the option to switch in and out of selfie mode by double-twisting the wrist. Furthermore, users can check on notifications just by lifting the phone quickly.
