The fight against the evil is not yet over when "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." season 4 returns this spring.

Tuesday's "Self-Control" episode ended with Aida, the Superior, LMDs, and the Framework appearing as though they'll be causing more trouble as the show moves forward. After escaping a horde of LMDs, Jemma (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Daisy (Chloe Bennet) had thrown themselves into Aida's Framework in an attempt to inhabit their avatar selves and save their other friends. The Framework can be considered a virtual world that's parallel to the real world. In this world, Mack (Henry Simmons) finally reunited with his daughter, while Coulson (Clark Gregg) is now teaching anti-Inhuman rhetoric. May (Ming-Na Wen) began working in the Hydra Triskelion, and Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) appeared to be in the arms of a mysterious woman.

Executive producer Jed Whedon, who also directed and wrote the episode, caught up with E! News to discuss what's next for the series. When asked about the mystery character who was with Fitz, Whedon said she isn't someone who fans would expect.

"I can't tease much, but all I can say is it is not Jemma," he said. "It's also a reflection of how steeped into this world he is that he doesn't seem to be troubled by the fact that she's in a grave, which was sort of the point of that moment. He looks like he's on top of the world," he went on to say.

Although the episode saw Jemma's body being buried while she's in her avatar, Whedon stressed that fans haven't seen the last of her. He teased the fan-favorite biochemist will reappear, but where she'll end up remains to be seen.

"They were plugging themselves into those avatars, so... she did not wake up in a warm tub," Whedon told TV Line. "We'll have to see where she appears, but that was not the end of Jemma Simmons, just to make that clear," the EP added.

The fourth season of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." returns on Tuesday, April 4, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
