'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' season 4 episode 1 spoilers, plot news: Ghost Rider arrives
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has finally introduced Ghost Rider in the premiere episode of its fourth season. But this Ghost Rider is not the one that most people are familiar with.
The premiere episode of season 4 titled "The Ghost" showed the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents working separately from each other. While Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Mack (Henry Simmons) were out on missions, Melinda (Ming-Na Wen) stayed behind at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters to train her very own strike team.
Skye (Chloe Bennet), as was seen in the previous season's finale, had become kind of a hacker outlaw, while Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), Jemma (Elizabeth Henstridge), and Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) were also caught up in their own professional affairs.
According to Gizmodo, it was the introduction of Gabriel Luna as Ghost Rider that picked up the episode's pace the most. But he wasn't the motorcycle stunt man Johnny Blaze popularized in the movies by Nicholas Cage. This Ghost Rider was instead the third incarnation of the character, Robbie Reyes. He was a Mexican-American youth who drove a muscle-car and who apparently had a soft spot for his brother, Gabe Reyes (Lorenzo James Henrie), as shown in this clip.
This was one of the reasons why Robbie's story was favored over Johnny's as a powerful new addition to "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." As Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb stated in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, "At the end of the day, S.H.I.E.L.D. is really a show about family."
He went on to add that while the show featured spies, they were also people who came together because they only had each other left in their lives. Also, Coulson could very well be viewed as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s father figure.
Fans will definitely be seeing more of Robbie as the Ghost Rider as well as a doting brother to Gabe in the upcoming episodes of ABC's hit superhero series.
According to TV Guide, episode 2, titled"Meet the New Boss," will feature Daisy battling it out with Ghost Rider, while Coulson will find himself face to face with the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." airs on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.
