'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' season 4 air date and news: Ghost Rider's origin explored in promo for next week's episode
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." season 4 has definitely gone a different direction with the arrival of Robbie Reyes' Ghost Rider (Gabriel Luna), and the next episode in the series, "The Good Samaritan," will delve more into the character's origin. A new promo has been released for the episode which will air next week on Tuesday.
The clip has Robbie confessing about how he got his powers and it may also be the first time that his brother Gabe (Lorenzo James Henrie) will see him take the form of the Spirit of Vengeance. The clip also features the different agents trying to find out how Robbie got his powers. One agent asks Coulson (Clark Gregg) if Robbie was an Inhuman, to which Coulson replies, "He said he made a deal with the devil."
What's interesting here is that Coulson is alluding to the first Ghost Rider's (Johnny Blaze) origin story. In the new comics, Robbie Reyes didn't make a deal with the devil after he died; his body was possessed by the spirit of a serial killer demon.
Robbie Reyes' origin won't be exactly like the comics when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), so fans will just have to wait for the episode to play out to see exactly how Robbie Reyes got his powers in the show.
Speaking of Johnny Blaze, ComicBook.com was able to point out an easter egg in the previous episode, "Lockdown." The beginning of the episode had Lucy and Joseph looking for the Darkhold in an old abandoned basement. On the wall of the basement is a poster for the Quentin Carnival, the very same carnival where Johnny Blaze worked as a stuntman before he became the Ghost Rider.
Though this could just be a small nod to the comics, some speculate that it could mean that Johnny is alive and kicking in the MCU. That gives potential for a Ghost Rider vs. Ghost Rider fight sequence.
The next episode of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." airs on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.
