2017 Ford Shelby Mustang FP350S release date, specs news: Ford Performance unveils entry-level race car
Ford Performance has introduced the all-new Shelby FP350S that is designed for racing. The vehicle's components such as the powertrain and chassis have been enhanced to ensure that it delivers optimal performance when on the track.
The 2017 Shelby Mustang FP350S made its debut at the 2016 Performance Racing Industry show in Indianapolis last week. The track-only model is an entry-level race car and is designed to compete in Trans-Am, National Auto Sport Association (NASA) and Sports Car Club of America (SCAA) racing events.
"Our goal has always been to provide those who want to race with equipment that enables them to compete and win. Shelby FP350S is our latest example," said Dave Pericak, global director of Ford Performance.
The all-new Shelby Mustang FP350S is powered by a 5.2-liter V8 engine that has been enhanced by Ford Performance Parts. It is said to be similar to the one used in the Shelby GT350R that delivers 526 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a Tremec 3160 manual transmission with integral oil pump and a rear final drive ratio of 3.73.
The race car's unibody chassis was modified. It is now stronger and stiffer due to additional seam welding. Other notable features include the performance-oriented oil pan and oil cooler, a Ford Performance splitter and an adjustable carbon fiber rear wing.
To ensure that the Shelby Mustang FP350S is ready to take on the track, Ford Performance has given it a race-oriented exhaust and suspension components including electric steering and a high-performance brake system. The six-point roll cage and Sparco racing seat are compliant with Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) regulations. Furthermore, there is also a MOTEC data acquisition system and a quick-release steering wheel.
The track-only vehicle comes with 19-inch wheels but customers can choose avail of the 18-inch forged race wheel package. Optional Shelby FP350S custom graphics are also available.
The 2017 Ford Performance Shelby Mustang FP350S race car will be available to order at Ford dealerships in the United States soon. Pricing has yet to be announced.
