2017 Ferrari J50 release date, specs news: Limited edition supercar unveiled in Japan
Ferrari has introduced the J50, a limited edition supercar that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Italian sports car manufacturer in Japan.
The Ferrari J50 is a two-seat mid-rear-engine roadster with a pair of carbon fiber targa panels stowed behind the seats, similar to the body style that was famous during the '70s and '80s. The supercar was created by Ferrari's Special Projects and designed by Ferrari Styling Centre in Maranello, Italy. Only 10 examples of the J50 will be built. To provide prospective owners full exclusivity, each car will be tailored specifically to the customer's requests.
The J50 is based on the 488 Spider. It is powered by the 3.9-liter V8 engine that won International Engine of the Year Award this year. The engine was tweaked to deliver more power at 681 horsepower. The J50 is also expected to exceed the 488 Spider's performance numbers. To recall, the 488 Spider goes from 0 to 62 miles per hour (mph) in just three seconds and achieves a top speed of 203 mph.
The limited edition supercar also benefits from new bodywork that highlights an innovative and futuristic design language. The aggressive front fascia features slim horizontal LED headlights and raised front wings. The "helmet visor" effect also translates to a windscreen that wraps around the car. There is also a black beltline similar to the one seen in other iconic supercars such as the GTO, F40 and F50.
The Ferrari J50 was also given more aerodynamic development with the radiators positioned closer and the front bumper redesigned. The windscreen header rail was also lowered for more airflow. Then, at the rear, the engine is showcased under a transparent polycarbonate cover. The aggressive design is also seen in the quad taillights and 20-inch forged wheels.
Inside, the cabin echoes the design and contour of the exteriors. Interiors feature a red-over-black color scheme and uses luxurious materials like fine leather and Alcantara.
