NVIDIA has made its presence in the emerging autonomous car segment even more apparent with its self-driving car, BB8, which was introduced and demonstrated at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Based on the demo, NVIDIA's BB8 is able to interact with the driver as it takes over control of the car in Autopilot mode. While driving autonomously, it can recognize stop and traffic signs, make safe turns and even change lanes on the freeway. With a simple voice command, the driver can also easily disengage the Autopilot feature before reaching its destination.

BB8 is powered by the company's DRIVE PX 2, an advanced open artificial intelligence (AI) computing platform that can perform AutoCruise functions with just 10 watts of power. It delivers a new driving experience with the combination of deep learning, sensor fusion and surround vision. It is also scalable, with up to two mobile processors and two discrete graphics processing units (GPUs), that can later on be used to power fully autonomous driving.

NVIDIA co-founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang also introduced AI Co-Pilot during his opening keynote address at CES 2017. AI Co-Pilot uses facial recognition, head tracking, gaze detection and lip reading to help make driving better and more enjoyable. With this technology, drivers can start their car without the need for a key and issue voice commands for controlling audio or during navigation. Furthermore, the system will also be able to remember one's personal preferences. The car will also be equipped with external sensors so that AI Co-Pilot can monitor the car's surroundings and traffic before making turns or noticing pedestrians.

NVIDIA is also paving the way to accelerate the automotive industry with its partnerships with automakers. At CES 2017, the company announced that it will be partnering with Audi and Mercedes-Benz in order to advance AI car technology.

NVIDIA announced that its goal is to develop and release a self-driving production vehicle by 2020.
