Nike Tiempo Pirlo Boots release date news, details: Boots come in Merlot, the color of wine
Nike recently revealed the new football boots it developed to pay tribute to the 37-year-old Italian footballer Andrea Pirlo and his winemaking.
Pirlo is one of Italy's best football players the past decade has witnessed because of his impressive ball control and passing ability. The midfielder is currently in the major League Soccer of New York FC.
The team specifically created the boots in Merlot, the color of wine, since the football star has a history with winemaking. In his hometown in Flero, Italy, a young Pirlo spent his childhood harvesting grapes at local vineyards. He currently owns the Pratum Coller winery in his hometown, sources said.
"The boot's upper features premium Alegria leather in a merlot colorway inspired by the juice of the grape," Nike revealed.
Similar to the logo of his winery, the boots have four golden stars on the heel and plate to honor Italy's World Cup titles. The Italian flag can also be observed on the lace aglet.
To further honor the footballer's heritage, the line "Aged Since '94" appears on the cork sockliner and also on the polkadot shoebox.
His winery produces 15,000 to 20,000 bottles of wine every year. In an interview conducted in 2013, the footballer revealed that he was fascinated by wine at a very young age. He said, "I've always drunk wine, ever since I was little and my mother mixed a little of it with water for me." He then added, "I like to read about wine, to understand it, to try wines from other regions other labels."
The Pirlo-inspired boots are available for a limited time only. The boots will be available starting on Monday, Sept. 19. Interested buyers can buy a pair through the Nike Football App and through the store's official website, nike.com.
