NBA trade rumors: Cleveland Cavaliers resumes interest in DeMarcus Cousins
The LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers is eyeing for a re-run of the team's championship bid for the next season. After a tight seven-game stretch in the finals, the Cavs managed to nab the National Basketball Association (NBA) title from Golden State Warriors' reach. However, James and the Cleveland front office are reportedly re-igniting their interest to acquire Sacramento Kings' center DeMarcus Cousins in anticipation of another finals match-up with Golden State.
Despite losing to the Cavs in the 2016 NBA Championship title run, the Warriors are keen on waging another campaign to steal the glory from James and company. Recently, Golden State made a startling sports headline after former MVP and ace scorer Kevin Durant threw away his Oklahoma Thunder uniform for a Warriors jersey. Basketball pundits think that with this roster upgrade, Golden State is clearly determined to win in the upcoming 2016–17 season.
The news seems to upset James, prompting him to urge the management to negotiate with Cousins to serve in the Cavs' center and power forward positions. With superstar status, James is allegedly able to make his wishes heard in the front office where he is considered as the team's "de facto" general manager, according to a report from Sportsrageous.
As a result, the three-time NBA champion seeks to trade Kevin Love for Sacramento's big man. With Cousins' fine display of hardcourt skills and athletic prowess in the 2016 Rio Olympics against the Chinese national basketball team, the Cavaliers have more than enough reasons to get him on board by the time he gets back from the Olympic games, sports blog King James Gospel reported.
While Kevin Love does have talents to speak of, his dismal performance in the 2015–16 regular and post seasons make him the weakest link in the chain. As for Cousins, the Sacramento big man presents an opportunity for the Cavs to strengthen their hold on the championship. In the 2015–16 season, he posted a record average of 26.9 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, ESPN reported.
