Liverpool Transfer News and Rumors: Tweets from Liverpool's Henry Sparks Rumors of Marcus Reus Transfer
With two seemingly unrelated tweets, Liverpool FC owner John W. Henry has sent the football world abuzz with rumors, sparking massive speculations centering on Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus.
Strangely, Henry tweeted his thoughts on an article detailing why the Earth won't be obliterated by the Higgs boson, the so-called God particle or the subatomic force within the universe that give particles mass and therefore acts as the "glue" which holds everything together. Without that "glue," everything will disintegrate at the speed of light.
Earlier scientist Stephen Hawking has warned that the Higgs boson could cause space and time to collapse, thus creating a "black hole" on Earth. But he said this may take trillions of years to happen.
In his first tweet, Henry said: "No, the 'God Particle' Is Not Going to Kill Us All Good news!"
He then followed it up with a seemingly out-of-place tweet: "Oh and sign Reus!"
The pair of tweets raised plenty of questions. Had the American businessman revealed one of the Anfield club's key transfer targets? Was he just mocking football's culture of transfer rumors? Was it a tongue-in-cheek poke at the constant requests he receives from Liverpool fans to sign the Dortmund star?
It is no secret that Liverpool is very much interested in getting the services of Reus. But so do other clubs.
Liverpool spent a fortune over the summer following the transfer of Luis Suarez to Arsenal. The club took nine new players to strengthen Brendan Rodgers' squad ahead of its first Champions League campaign since 2009-10.
With Suarez out, Mario Balotelli was designated as the club's key attacker, a smart choice considering Liverpool's offense has suffered with the injury to Daniel Sturridge, according to Dave Kidd of the Mirror.
Reus is certainly the type of player Rodgers would like to have. The athletic forward can play on either flank, behind the striker or in a more advanced role, and can quickly launch counter-attacks.
But wanting Reus is one thing; signing him is another. Dortmund have consistently denied that their prized star will be sold. Club chief Hans-Joachim Watzke was recently quoted as saying, "We have said many times this summer that Reus will not leave. There is no possibility that he will play elsewhere."
Liverpool fans would certainly welcome Reus to the club, but that prospect has not yet appeared on the horizon.
