CM Punk Returning to WWE 2014 News: Seems Unlikely as Wrestler Cuts Ties With WWE, Joins UFC
Phil Brooks, better known as CM Punk, has signed a two-year contract with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), finally cutting all ties with World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (WWE) after his much publicized spat with the company over royalties.
The news set of a storm of both positive and negative reactions on the Internet. However, it may not be good news for his wife AJ Lee, who is still on the rolls with WWE. Nevertheless, AJ congratulated Brooks on Twitter for his move which could force her to quit WWE, too.
Brooks doesn't have any experience in mixed martial arts and this will be a first for him. He announced his decision to join UFC at a press conference that was held after UFC 181, saying he was excited to join the UFC and that it was "a really easy decision to make." He added that "it is something I can put 100 percent of myself into and get 100 percent back."
At 36, Brooks is already considered old in the world of mixed martial arts. He addressed this during the press conference, saying he was joining the UFC "to challenge himself."
The deal with Brooks seemed to have been in the works since last month. It seemed he had been training in jiu-jitsu for a number of years and has also spent time doing mixed martial arts.
Many fans are comparing Brooks to Brock Lesnar who also switched from WWE to UFC from 2008 to 2011.
Dana White, the president of UFC, said since Brooks is a novice he will debut against someone with the same 0-0 or 1-0 record. White also pointed out that when Lesnar debuted at the UFC, he was already a world class wrestler and the UFC "threw the kitchen sink at him."
Back at the WWE, the official Facebook page for CM Punk which was run by the company was taken offline. On the other hand, he is still part of the alumni section of the main WWE Facebook page.
