Adrian Peterson's Trial Postponed As Lawyers Request New Judge
The child abuse hearing for Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was postponed Wednesday after the prosecution requested the judge be recused from the case.
According to USA Today Sports, Peterson's lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said his client would not enter a plea until it was decided if a new judge should take over the case. Peterson's next court date could be December or later, depending on if a different judge will be presiding over the case.
Hardin told reporters out of the courthouse that Peterson would like to have his trial as soon as possible. Peterson is reportedly ready to get his legal concerns out of the way so he can again play for his team, the Minnesota Vikings, which has benched him since his legal allegations came up earlier this year.
"Look, this is a really good man that I am incredibly proud to represent," Hardin said. "This is a case about parenting decisions and whether something unfortunate happened when a parenting decision was made by a man who believes strongly and loves his children very much."
The prosecution is reportedly requesting the judge be recused after he described attorneys as "media whores."
9th District Court Judge Kelly Case defended calling the lawyers "media whores" last month, saying at the court hearing: "Yeah, that was meant as a humorous joke […] and unfortunately humor is sometimes taken the wrong way."
"I apologize to both of you," the judge added to the lawyers. "That's not how I feel about any of you. I think you're doing a great job, and I've known Mr. Hardin for 25 years."
