'Zootopia' news: Directors talk possible sequel, say it will tackle Judy and Nick's relationship

While Disney has yet to officially announce plans for a sequel to its box office hit "Zootopia," directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore say that the overwhelming fan response to the film could potentially make it a bigger phenomenon than it already is.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Howard said that having worked for so long on the Disney animated film, the "Zootopia" team had felt some sadness when they finally finished it and the film was released for the world to enjoy. Yet, the "Zootopia" director added, "[I]t's nice that there's this potential for it to get bigger."
Though it is too early to tell if a sequel to the blockbuster film could someday be in the works, Howard said, "There's a vast potential for this world, so I'd love to see something more come from it."
According to the director, a lot of material was cut during the making of the film, including characters that will only appear on the DVD.
Should a spin-off be in the cards for "Zootopia," Moore said that it will have to tackle the real relationship between "Zootopia" main characters Judy (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick (Jason Bateman).
According to the directors, the relationship between the two protagonists is one of the top questions "Zootopia" fans always ask about.
"We will have to take on [the question], what is Nick and Judy's relationship like?" Moore said. "And somebody's going to be disappointed."
Meanwhile, Goodwin and Bateman have previously spoken out about what they expect their respective characters to be doing in the possible "Zootopia" sequel.
"I would also like to see Nick [Wilde] have to be the one to convince Judy [Hopps] that the world is worth fighting for," Goodwin told Cinema Blend.
Bateman, who pointed out that Judy and Nick are partners on the force by the end of the film, said: "The two of us, kicking ass out there. Cleaning up the streets."
"We're a couple of new cops out there," he added. "So, bad guys, be warned."
"Zootopia" is out on Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, June 7.
