Microsoft's Xbox One begins previewing anniversary updates, which include Cortana integration and improved sharing among other things.

The Xbox One is purportedly a willing recipient of some anniversary updates that Microsoft is rolling out not only for its Windows 10 users but also for Xbox One users. Among these updates are the addition of Cortana and more leeway when it comes to capturing, editing, and sharing game clips.

According to CNET, the anniversary update for the Xbox One would be a "giant free software upgrade" for the said console. Members of the Xbox Preview Program would be the first ones to test-drive the updates this week, as it rolls out over the next few months.

Whereas previous updates merely involved a revamped interface, a major speed boost, and the ability to play older Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One, the 2016 update will feature Cortana voice commands, the ability to peek into what your friends are playing on their gaming PCs, and Windows apps straight to your TV.

Apparently, there would be a host of other tweaks, but as for the earlier promise of Microsoft that gamers would finally get the chance to play their own music in the background, that is something that's been put on the backburner. CNET's report said users would have to wait until later this year for that feature to become a reality.

PC World also shared that since Xbox One technically runs on Windows 10, users can expect a merger of both Windows and Xbox app stores. The impending anniversary update would finally allow users to download a variety of Windows apps onto the Xbox console. These downloads may then be used on TV screens.

Some of the newer tweaks that users can enjoy are a progress meter that shows how quickly games are downloading, vertical scrolling of game library instead of horizontal, ability to share or hide achievements and screenshots on the activity feed, and the option to download Game DVR clips from Xbox. Users would also be able to share screenshots and game clips from Xbox Live to Twitter and use the Facebook Friend Finder that lets users find friends who are Xbox users based on their Facebook contact lists.
