X-Men character Gambit is getting his own spinoff movie with Channing Tatum playing the part of the card-wiz superhero, Fox studio has announced.

This could mean that after the last X-Men movie "Days of Future Past," the next movie in the franchise could move backwards in time and focus on Apocalypse, which will see Gambit and Wolverine joining him as two of his horsemen.

Gambit, played by Taylor Kitsch, did make an appearance in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which Screenrant notes broke the continuity in the X-Men franchise. However, Gambit's role in that movie was limited and he was not seen in any other X-Men movies.

Following the Fox announcement, online movie fans have been expressing their eagerness to see Tatum play the role of Gambit.

Deadline notes that Gambit movie screenplay is being written by Josh Zetumer who was the writer on "Robocop." The movie's plot is based on a story written by Chris Claremont. Claremont was working for Marvel Comics in 1990 when he created the Gambit character along with Jim Lee. Reid Carolin, who is a partner of Tatum, will produce movie.

In addition to his new Gambit role, Tatum is currently involved in the making of Magic Mike XXL in which he plays the lead role. His next appearance on screen will be against Olympic gold medal winning wrestler Mark Schultz in the film "Foxcatcher" which is due for release on Nov. 16 this year.

After the film premiered in Cannes in May, many have predicted that Tatum's performance will put him in contention for an Oscar award.
