Woman Banned From Gym After Protesting Against Transgender 'Man In Female Locker Room'
A gym in Midland, Michigan, has cancelled the membership of a woman after she refused to stop telling other members that a "man" was using the woman's locker room.
Yvette Cornier said she saw the man at the women's locker room of the Planet Fitness gym on Joe Mann Boulevard in Midland last Feb. 28.
"I was blocked, because a man was standing there," Cormier told MLive.com. "It freaked me out because, why is a man in here?"
She was told by an employee of the fitness gym that the person identified himself as a woman.
Cornier complained to the Planet Fitness corporate office and she said she was told that the gym has "no judgement zone" policy and they would not tell the man to stay out of the women's locker room.
In a statement released by Planet Fitness, the gym said it has a non-discrimination policy. "Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members," the statement read. "Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity."
It added that Cornier's behavior led to the cancellation of her membership. "The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was cancelled," Planet Fitness said.
For Cornier, it was a safety issue. Before her membership got cancelled, she went back to the gym and told women in the locker room about the individual.
She then got a call from the gym's corporate office informing her that she was violating the policy. When she was asked by the company if she was going to stop talking to the other gym members about what she saw, she said she would not.
It was then that the gym told her that she was no longer welcome to go to Planet Fitness.
