Best-selling author George R.R. Martin (a.k.a. GRRM) has been trying to finish writing "Winds of Winter " for a long time, but it seems that book nerds will have to wait a few more months.

No one knows how far along the author is in his work, and all that is left for fans is to speculate. What remains to be clear is that HBO's epic series "Game of Thrones" will now have to come up with a new storyline, since its book counterpart has long been behind.

GRRM previously admitted that he went through an inevitable writer's block, which is totally normal for novelists. His explanation about it seemed apologetic, and he felt bad about it just as much as the fans did. While the release date of "Winds of Winter"  hangs in the balance, there are recent reports following GRRM's statements about a possible spinoff. The writer sat down in an interview with Entertainment Weekly where he proposed a "Dunk and Egg" strategy if HBO approaches him to do a series related to "Game of Thrones."

The media outlet provided an explanation to GRRM's suggestion, which reads:

"The Dunk & Egg stories are a series of novellas set in the same world of A Song of Ice and Fire as Game of Thrones, except they place roughly 90 years earlier than the time of characters like Tyrion, Daenerys, and Arya. The stories follow a "hedge knight" (nomadic; doesn't own land) Ser Duncan the Tall, who would later become a member of the Kingsguard, and his squire Egg, who later becomes King Aegon V Targaryen of Westeros. There is a trio of novellas in the series so far (collected in the anthology 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'), with many more planned."

Rumor has it that GRRM might focus more on the above-mentioned concept once HBO gives him the green light, which might further delay "Winds of Winter." Regardless if it goes through or not, the book is anticipated to be done around 2016-2017.
