'Wayward Pines' season 3 spoilers, renewal news update: FOX boss positive of show's return; exec hints 'compelling idea' for new season
Despite having low ratings for season 2, "Wayward Pines" may still have a good chance of being renewed for a third season sometime in the future.

While the second season's ratings earned a low average, the finale aired last month certainly drew impressive numbers. In comparison with season 1 which had an average of 3.8 million viewers, season 2 averaged a total of 2.4 million viewers and a 0.7 demo rating. Adding the digital video recording (DVR) statistics, the show clocked in an average of 3.5 million viewers for its last episode.
"I definitely think there could be a Season 3," FOX Television Group CEO Dana Walden said during the recent Television Critics Association summer press tour held in California. "It's still the No. 1 scripted show of the summer," she added.
The network has yet to reveal the statistics from other media platforms but during the interview, Walden did not confirm if the series will be renewed. The show's fate still hangs in the air but Walden mentioned talking to the producers about their ideas for a possible new season. "They have a really compelling idea for season three that I liked very much," Walden hinted. "We're definitely talking about the show right now," she said.
Speaking with Slash Film, Walden hopes she comes up with a decision just in time to avoid scheduling conflicts later on. She clarified that before renewing/cancelling the program, they have to see the numbers across all viewing platforms first.
"I hope to make one in a pretty timely way," the CEO stated. "I know that [director] Night's schedule is busy. We also have almost all the information we need. We just want to see a few more of the delayed viewing platform results," she added.
For the uninitiated, season 2 left off with the humans entering the cryogenic pods to protect themselves from the Abbies. Jason Higgins (Tom Stevens) came up with the idea since he already anticipated the invasion of the monstrous creatures. Also, the birth of a human-like Abbie was teased to possibly return next year.
FOX has yet to make an official announcement regarding the status of "Wayward Pines" but once renewed, the series is expected to return sometime in the summer of 2017.
