Months after FOX aired the final episode of "Wayward Pines" season 2, fans are still waiting for the network's announcement about the show's renewal for season 3.

The series exceeded expectations during its first season when it overperformed in the ratings. But the show's numbers experienced a steady drop during the airing of its second season. This led to speculations that the network could be considering to cancel the show.

During the winter press tour of Television Critics Association, FOX chairman Gary Newman clarified the reports that the M. Night Shyamalan-produced mystery sci-fi thriller based on the novels written by Blake Crouch may still have the chance to return on TV in the future. However, it will not premiere this summer.

According to Newman, they are still discussing a lot of things before they can finalize the return of "Wayward Pines" for its third season.

"Wayward didn't come together quickly enough for us to have it this summer; there have been discussions about casting. We're still talking about it," the network chairman said during the panel as reported by Deadline. "It's possible you'll see Wayward at some point back on FOX. But we are focusing a little bit more heavily on unscripted this summer."

This could mean that at this time, the network would like to prioritize other shows first over the series.

FOX entertainment president David Madden also said during the winter press panel that there are numerous talks about the fate of "Wayward Pines" within the network. "A lot of conversations are going on, as you can imagine. These conversations are complex. We hope to be able to announce something shortly," the network president also said, according to a report from BuddyTV.

The fate of "Wayward Pines" season 3 is expected to be revealed by the network in the coming days.
