'Wayward Pines' season 3 air date, latest news: Upcoming season to compete with 'Stranger Things'? Low ratings causing delay in renewal?

Will there be a \"Wayward Pines\" season 3? | Fox

Although there is no specific air date yet for "Wayward Pines" season 3, executive producer M. Night Shyamalan and Fox have confirmed that a third installment will happen. However, fans shouldn't be surprised if they see striking similarities between the Fox series and Netflix original "Stanger Things."

"Wayward Pines" is based on Blake Crouch's book trilogy of the same title, and it was adapted for TV by Fox through the joint efforts of Crouch and Shyamalan. What fans of the series do not know is that Shyamalan commissioned brothers Ross and Matt Duffer to write and produce the first season of "Wayward Pines," which starred Matt Dillon. The brothers Duffer are the brains behind "Stranger Things."

According to Slash Film, Shyamalan hired the two for the series he was executive producing after he read their screenplay for a movie titled "Hidden."

Fans and viewers of the series might have noticed that the maiden season of "Wayward Pines" had a somewhat 1990s "Twin Peaks" feel to it. Movie Pilot reports that it's one of the trademarks of the Duffer brothers, which both "Wayward Pines" season 1 and "Stranger Things" clearly reflect.

While Fox is yet to confirm an air date for "Wayward Pines" season 3, fans are hoping that the upcoming installment will show the same pizzazz that season 1 was known for, which season 2 apparently lacked.

Fox executives have previously said that a "compelling storyline" for the third season has prompted them to consider renewing the series. Still, a confirmation for season 3 is still warranted from the network, and in case it is given the green light, then fans could expect a summer 2017 release date.

Meanwhile, there are speculations that the significant drop from season 1's 3.06 million viewers to season 2's 2.4 million might be the reason why Fox is having second thoughts with the series' renewal.

The above speculation runs contrary to what Fox CEO Dana Walden previously said that "Wayward Pines" tops the list of the network's scripted shows for the summer, so fans will do well to take rumors of the show's cancellation as mere speculations.

Shyamalan has said before that "Wayward Pines" is supposed to be a three-season story, so unless Fox confirms anything, fans could still hope that season 3 will drop in summer of 2017.
