Irish-Canadian historical drama "Vikings" is currently on a break, but season 4B will see new rulers rising into power after the thrilling and bloody mid-season finale last month.

The first half of the fourth season concluded with a time jump, with Ragnar's disappearance and his son's growth to manhood. The sons discovered new revelations leading them to declare a plan to kill their father. An aged Ragnar eventually returned, and it seems as if he is just waiting for one of his sons to end his life and claim the throne.

The time jump was for the fans to have an idea of what's in store for the show's comeback later this year. Series creator Michael Hirst explained that even though they already did a time jump before, this time would be different. "It seemed like it was better to do something dramatic and get to where we needed to be," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "This has always been the story of Ragnar and his sons, so the time jump is just enough time for all the boys to grow up. In this last episode, we got a glimpse of the boys before starting the next half of the season; it gives a taste of what's to come."

Ragnar's sons are expected to take on main roles now that they have grown, and Ragnar's return will bring a lot of complications in the story. "Some of them are bitter about it. Some accommodate it. But when Ragnar comes back, they're confronted by a lot of issues," Hirst told TV Guide.

As for the show's female characters, Hirst cautioned viewers not to underestimate Lagertha. The feisty character might not be in the flash-forward, but she surely will be back in season 4B. After everything Lagertha has been through in her life, Hirst does not see the show moving on without her. "She is the soul of the show and I need her," he said.

The network has yet to announce an official and definitive premiere date for "Vikings" season 4B, but the show will definitely return in the Fall on History.
