'Underground' season 2 spoilers, plot news: Aisha Hinds lands series regular role as Harriet Tubman; Amirah Vann promoted series regular

After being seen in silhouette in the May finale of "Underground," Harriet Tubman will finally have a less-blurry face when the hit WGN America drama returns next year.
"All the Way" star Aisha Hinds has been recently tapped to portray Tubman for the acclaimed program's sophomore run. From being born a slave, Tubman became the Underground Railroad's most famous conductor. After managing to escape herself, she risks her life again and again just to free her family. As a devout Christian, she believes her God-given mission is to lead anyone who is willing to travel north across dangerous territories to achieve freedom. Hinds' other acting credits include Showtime's "The Chi" and Fox's event program "Shots Fired."
In other related news, Amirah Vann has been promoted to series regular for her role as Ernestine. "Fringe" star Jasika Nicole will join the cast for a recurring role as Georgia, an abolitionist who is quietly confident and hides secrets of her own. Other recurring stars include Jesse Luken ("Justified") as Smoke, the second in command of Patty Cannon's notorious gang of slave catchers and Michael Trotter as Biographer, an individual who is fascinated with observing people.
The upcoming season will have 10 episodes and production will begin on Monday (Aug. 29) in Savannah, GA. The story explores a divided America and the citizens' struggle for freedom while at the brink of a civil war.
Series regulars Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Christopher Meloni, Alano Miller and Jessica de Gouw are all set to reprise their roles as Rosalee, Noah, August, Cato and Elizabeth. Meanwhile, Marc Blucas will return for his guest-starring role as John Hawkes. According to Deadline, "Underground" remains as WGN America's most-watched show ever after it delivered an average of 3 million total viewers weekly.
"Underground" season 2 has been confirmed to premiere early 2017, but the network has yet to announce an official release date.
