'Uncharted' Release Date Delay: After Delay, Movie Is Back On Track; 2016 Release Eyed

After a series of delays, the movie "Uncharted" appears to be back on track and is expected to be released in 2016.

The film is based on the first part of the "Uncharted" video game series owned by Sony titled "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune."

Over the years news surrounding the film has not been encouraging, with a number of directors and writers joining and then leaving. In 2011, Mark Wahlberg said he was interested in doing the film when the script was being written by David O. Russell. He also mentioned that if everything went as planned, production would commence in 2011. However, Russell dropped out as director and subsequently Wahlberg also left.

Since then, several writers have taken a shot at creating a script for the movie but left afterwards. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the current script was written by David Guggenheim who worked on "Safe House." Since then the studio has hired Mark Boal who previously worked on "The Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty," to add the finishing touches to the script for the movie which is going to be directed by Seth Gordon.

Boal has not worked on any action movies, but it seems he is a fan of the game series and this is what prompted him to work on the script.

As for the lead in the film, there is no news yet on who will take on the role of Nathan Drake with Walhberg no longer in the running. Recently Sony held talks with Chris Pratt, who is part of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise, to play Nathan Drake. However, Pratt turned down the role.

With the script being finalized, it could mean that Sony is close to recruiting the lead actor for the film which is due for production and filming in the early part of 2015.
