Uganda pastor poisoned to death after challenging supernatural Islamic belief

A Baptist pastor in Uganda died last week from poison believed to have been put in his food by a Muslim villager.
According to a witness, Micah Byamukama, the 61-year-old pastor of Kasecha Baptist Church in Kibuku District, died at around 9 p.m. on May 15 after ingesting a toxic substance called organophosphate, which is often used as an insecticide, Morning Star News reported.
Local sources speculate that the poison was put by Ahmed Mupere, a villager whom the pastor recently had a discussion with regarding the Jinn, which, according to Islamic belief, are supernatural beings that exist parallel to man. They are said to be beings that were created before man and are invisible to the physical eye.
The pastor, being a former animist, used to believe in ancestral spirits. When he put his faith in Christ, he changed his name from "Mukama" to "Byamukama," which means "All for God."
He explained to Mupere that the Jinn are "acts of Satan and should be denounced." He also said that Jesus Christ has overcome the power of Satan, including the Jinn.
This apparently offended Mupere. Five days before the pastor was poisoned, unidentified men attacked him with knives. Fortunately, he was able to call for help and neighbors came to his aid. The pastor's neighbors believe the men who attacked him were hired by Mupere.
On the day that he died, Byamukama was alone in the house he shared with a church member when Mupere visited him at 7 p.m. Mupere pretended to reconcile with him, and the two ate food from one dish. After some time, Mupere stopped eating. A local source said it was probably during this time that he had slipped poison into the food.
"Ahmed took a little food with me and then stopped. When I asked him why not continue with the food, he said he had eaten at his home, and that he wanted go back home because it was getting late," Byamukama reportedly told a neighbor before he died at the Kabweri Health Centre.
Byamukama suffered from stomach pains, diarrhea and vomiting before succumbing to death.
Police are investigating the matter. Mupere has reportedly fled the village.
