The five new Twilight Saga short films that were announced recently will have five female directors chosen to helm the movies which will be shown on Facebook in 2015.

Fans of the Twilight Series written by Stephenie Meyer were undoubtedly giddy with delight at this news. Unfortunately for fans, it was soon learned that none of the cast of the Twilight Saga will be joining the films which put a damper on their spirits. Despite that, as the New York Times reports, the films will involve characters that appear in the films and the books they were based on.

The New York Times also reports that this attempt to kick start the now defunct franchise could ultimately result in the sixth Twilight film. As studios are looking to keep their most valuable franchises going with prequels and sequels. Choosing to go with Facebook however is a novel option and one which other studios are also exploring to keep franchises going.

This idea was further echoed in the words of the Michael Burns vice chairman of Lions Gate who said, "Facebook is a great way for us to introduce the world of 'Twilight' to a whole new audience while re-energizing existing fans"

In this project the five winning short films will be chosen by a panelist comprising s Kristen Stewart, Stephenie Meyer, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer and Julie Bowen. The panelists will not only select the winning short films but also mentor the participants as part of the series that is titled "Storytellers — New Creative Voices of 'The Twilight Saga'.

The five Twilight Shorts also signals that Hollywood is exploring new options to distribute films. This trend was kicked off recently with Weinstein Company's sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which will be released in IMAX theaters and on Netflix, rather than going on nationwide distribution as usual.
