'True Detective' season 3 updates and rumors: Matthew McConaughey expresses interest to reprise his role, series creator to work on a different show?
The third season of crime anthology drama "True Detective" is one of the most-anticipated HBO series to return, but as of now, its fate still hangs in the balance. The network has neither renewed nor canceled the series since season 2 wrapped up last August 2015 and now fans are wondering if the show will ever make its way back to the small screen.
If one thing is for certain, season 1 cast member Matthew McConaughey is more than willing to reprise his role in the show if given the opportunity. "I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights," the Academy Award-winning actor said during an interview with "The Rich Eisen Show." He mentioned how fun it was to work on the series, stressing that he was in his own element when he was portraying the nihilistic homicide detective.
The pilot season raised the bar high for the show, but unfortunately, it was too high to meet the fans' expectations. Season 2 featured A-list celebrities including Colin Farrell as Detective Ray Velcoro, Rachel McAdams as Detective Ani Bezzerides and Taylor Kitsch as California Highway Patrol Officer Paul Woodrugh. However, the storyline did not impress viewers which made most viewers unsurprised when the HBO drama did not get a renewal right away. Former HBO Programming President previously told The Frame that he blames himself for the show not having a production with high standards, causing it to be left in limbo for a long time.
As of now, it seems like series creator Nick Pizzolatto will try to focus on working on another project. Rumor has it that Pizzolatto has other ideas in mind which he will probably use for a different series, The Hollywood Reporter notes.
