'True Detective' season 3 news, renewal rumors: HBO boss still optimistic of show's return, season 3 status revealed

A year after the second season of "True Detective" aired, fans are still wondering if the famed HBO program will ever return to the small screen. The network neither renewed nor cancelled the series after its last episode but an HBO boss finally shed light on the issue.
"It's not dead," HBO head of programming Casey Bloys said at during the annual TCA press tour. "We are hoping for a third season. It's a very valuable franchise for us."
The anthology drama is written by Nic Pizzolatto who is still under an overall deal with the network. According to Bloys, Pizzolatto is working on several other projects at the moment and the third season will likely be penned by someone else — still under Pizzolatto's supervision. However, Bloys explained that the new season might not happen anytime soon, saying: "I'm not sure we have the right take for a third season yet."
Season 1 quickly gained popularity when it aired in 2014 with A-list celebrities being in the cast. After a phenomenal success, the second season did not meet the expectations of fans which led to a significant loss in viewership. The mixed response from its audience may have led the series' fate to remain in limbo for a while but now that its status has been confirmed, fans are hoping HBO will bring the program back to its glory.
Actor Matthew McConaughey, who was the lead star in season 1, previously expressed his interest in joining the series if given the chance. During an interview on "The Rich Eisen Show," the actor mentioned that he approached Pizzolatto about reprising his role as Det. Rustin Cohle."It would have to be the right context, the right way," McConaughey explained. "That thing—when I read [the original script] I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy, Rustin Cohle, I'm in."
He also shared the pleasure it brought when he portrayed the character, saying: "I was a happy man when I made that for six months, because I was on my own island. Luckily my wife put up with me."
HBO has yet to announce a premiere date for "True Detective' season 3.
