HBO Programming President Casey Bloys previously confirmed that "True Detective" season 3 is a big possibility. It's been months since his announcement, but the network still hasn't revealed further developments. Recent reports are suggesting that Nic Pizzolatto's absence in the upcoming season could be a factor in the show's cancellation.

Former showrunner Nic Pizzolatto has been assigned to do another TV project. Hence, he won't be able to write for the possible upcoming seasons. Pizzolatto reportedly landed a new project that will feature Robert Downey Jr. as the lead character.

Despite his absence for future seasons, reports said that Bloys confirmed that "True Detective" season 3 is happening.

A few months ago, Bloys told Entertainment Weekly that the show won't be cancelled because of Pizzolatto. The programming chief hinted that the former showrunner could take on a supervisory role while a new writer takes on his former job.

"It is not dead," Bloys told EW. "I talked to Nic about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don't think Nic has a take and he's working on some other projects. We're open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It's a valuable franchise, it's not dead, we just don't have a take for a third season yet," he added.

"True Detective" has a really great opening season, garnering over 3.3 million total viewers when it launched on HBO in 2014 across cable and digital platforms. Its debut rating was recently matched by the sci-fi drama "Westworld" which launched last Sunday night.

The latest season of the show, which starred Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch, ended in August 2015. So far, the network hasn't made recent announcements about the development of a third season.
