The first season of "True Detective" was a ratings and critical hit for HBO.

The channel is hoping that the second season of the anthological series will deliver more of the same.

Since the end of the first season, HBO has been busy rounding up the cast for the upcoming season. It recently announced that Taylor Kitsch, Rachel McAdams and Kelly Reilly will be joining the show.

Kitsch's involvement in the series has been known for a while after he mentioned in a recent interview that he would be appearing in the second season. His role was later confirmed by Matthew McConaughey, who starred in the first season along with Woody Harrelson.

However, Kitsch's role was never official confirmed by HBO, which earlier announced that Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn would be two of the three new male leads in the second season.

McAdams involvement in the series was also rumored for a while. The official announcement put all doubts to rest about the cast.

McAdams and Reilly will be playing the two female leads in the show. McAdams will play Ani Bezzerides, a detective from Ventura County, while Reilly will play Jordan, a former actress who is the wife of Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn).

Vaughn 's character is a criminal trying to recast himself as an entrepreneur, while Colin Farrell plays Ray Velcoro, a corrupt detective who has been bought by a mobster.

Kitsch will play Paul Woodrugh, a motorcycle officer who works in the California Highway Patrol. He is a war veteran who served in the armed forces and has a troubled past which he wants to leave behind.

IGN reports that production has already begun on the second season, which will have eight episodes. They will be written by Nic Pizzolatto. At least two of them will directed by Justin Lin.
