"Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," the 2001 film adaptation of the popular action-adventure game starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, is now reportedly getting a reboot that will be more of a back-to-the-roots story.

Producer Graham King explained that their vision for the "Tomb Raider" reboot would revolve around Lara Croft's search for her father, Richard James Croft.

"Well this is kind of what we call a back to the roots story," the producer explained. "This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and I think that's what Alicia found so interesting about it," King added.

In the video games, Richard is also an archaeologist like his daughter. He is said to be a caring father, but is also an absent one. In one of the video game installments, Richard was presumed to have committed suicide, while in another installment, he was double-crossed and murdered.

It is not clear, however, if the movie will faithfully follow the events that transpired in the video games, but Alicia Vikander, who is cast to play Lara Croft in the reboot, agreed that the upcoming movie will be based on the game's reboot in 2013.

"That is more of an origin story," Vikander says. "You get into an emotional aspect of getting to know Lara hopefully in an in-depth way. So I hope that doing a film of the rebooted game will bring something new and fresh that'll stand on its own two legs."

Director Roar Uthaug also confirmed this when he lauded the 2013 reboot of the "Tomb Raider" game, saying that he will try doing something similar. "I think we'll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I'm hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise," he says.

The "Tomb Raider" reboot is slated for a March 16, 2018 release date.
