'Tokyou Ghoul' update: Season 3 confirmed; release date on hold?

With the last installment of "Tokyo Ghoul" dating over a year ago, fans are now expecting to see a third season of the anime series very soon. However, it seems like the production hangs in the balance with a premiere date nowhere in sight.
According to HNGN, FUNimation Entertainment CEO Gen Fukunaga already confirmed a third season for the dark fantasy anime in November 2015. In an interview regarding the "Tokyo Ghoul" mobile game, Fukunaga slipped in the fact that a 2016 release for season 3 is in order. "Ever since we began simulcasting the anime series last year, fans of 'Tokyo Ghoul' have been clamoring for a mobile game. With Season 2 now finished and Season 3 set for 2016, the anticipation for the game has only grown higher," he said. However, the animation company has not given any more update after that.
According to rumors making rounds online, a probable reason behind the delay is a lack of source material. The manga version only has 43 chapters, which is said to be insufficient for a whole season.
Meanwhile, another speculation is that the show will push through, but it will most probably veer away from the manga series. Reports say that the upcoming series will have fillers instead. Like the situation in the much-awaited follow-up season to "Attack on Titan," fans would rather wait for a longer time than to watch a completely different storyline in "Tokyo Ghoul."
As noted by The Bitbag, there is currently an ongoing online petition to have a Tokyo Ghoul reboot. It has been initiated by Madhouse, and to date, the petition has already garnered over 3,000 signatures from fans all over the globe. The aim of this petition is to have an anime adaptation that keeps true to the manga series written by Sui Ishida. This is an effort made by "Tokyo Ghoul" fans who seemed to be disappointed with how Studio Pierrot handled the adaptation of the popular manga series.
