'Tokyo Ghoul' season 3 spoilers: New protagonist next season revealed?

\"Tokyo Ghoul\" | Weekly Young Jump

A lot of speculations are going around among fans on social media regarding the upcoming installment of the anime series "Tokyo Ghoul." The most talked about is the release date which has not been announced officially. The other main thing that has fans searching left and right for answers is the subject of the protagonist for the next season. Two characters are put forward as the leading contenders for the main character in "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3, Haise Sasaki and Touka Kirishima.

Some fans believe that Haise Sasaki is cut out to be the next hero. Sasaki is said to be an avatar of Kaneki Ken, believed so because he sports Ken's combination black-and-white hair color.

It can be recalled that the first two seasons revolved around Kaneki Ken, a college student who was transformed into a "half-ghoul" after some organs of the ghoul, Rize Kamishiro, were placed inside his body in a surgical procedure. In the first installment, Ken's hair had all been black, but in the second season, it turned white after he supposedly embraced the half-ghoul changes brought about by his half-ghoul transformation.

Speculations point to Ken losing his memory and giving himself up to the Commission of Counter Ghoul, but afterward taking on the identity of Sasaki, who is a ghoul investigator.

Another group of "Tokyo Ghoul" enthusiasts suggest the new protagonist to be Touka Kirishima. The choice carries a bit more weight as Madhouse Entertainment is also said to be gunning for the character to take the spotlight after it took over the production of the series from Pierrot Studio.

Kirishima is a student of To-Oh University (an animated version of the real-life Japanese Toho University). Madhouse is acquainted with To-Oh University from its work on another anime series, "Death Note," whose main character, Light Yagami, is also a student of To-Oh.

"Tokyo Ghoul" takes place in an alternate reality where ghouls exist side by side with humans, hiding their true nature to escape discovery by the latter and evade capture by authorities. Ghouls are said to live on human flesh.

"Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 is scheduled for release either in the fall of 2016 or in March 2017.
