'This Is Us' season 1 episode 16 spoilers: Exceptional episode to feature father and son bonding in 'Memphis'

Randall (Sterling K. Brown) knows that his biological father, William (Ron Cephas Jones), is living on borrowed time. So when the father asks the son to take a road trip together back to his past, Randall agrees.
With only a few episodes left in its freshman season, NBC's dramedy series "This Is Us" will give its viewers a chance to get to know the kind of life William has lived, his principles and motivations, and how he made it through the years following the day he left Randall outside the fire station.
William's younger years revolved around Memphis, and this is where their road trip will take the father and son duo to catch up, to bond, and to just have a good time before William becomes too weak to move around.
And in an especially touching scene previewed in the trailer for the next episode, William lauds Randall's decision to search for him and knock on his door when he did. He never thought he would ever have a chance to meet the son he has sired and then abandoned. But fate has been extra kind to him despite everything, and it has even given him a chance to make it up to his son before he dies from his illness.
He went on to call Randall, "My beautiful boy," which seems to have hit a fragile chord in Randall's emotions. Could this upcoming episode be the one that ushers in William's inevitable death? Will Randall be able to cope with it better now that he has had a chance to truly spend time with his biological father, or will this only make it more difficult for him down the line?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-executive producer Ken Olin said that aside from highlighting Randall's emotional and mental state, fans should also see how this particular point in Randall's life will affect his relationships with the people in his life, more particularly with his brother, Kevin (Justin Hartley), whom he had always been in conflict with when they were younger. This really was the story that they've telling over the course of season 1.
"People do grow in their lives," Olin said, adding: "Kevin realizes and takes responsibility for how fragile his brother is. It's more important than 'Is he going to be okay?'"
"This Is Us" season 1 episode 16 airs on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 9 p.m. on NBC.
