'The Vampire Diaries' Season 8 spoilers, plot news: Nina Dobrev to return as Elena with Bonnie paying with her life?

It has long been reported that the former "The Vampire Diaries" lead actress Nina Dobrev will be returning to the hit The CW supernatural drama series to reprise her role. However, her return as Elena Gilbert for the show's eighth season could mean that one of the main characters in the series has to die.

Dobrev exited the show towards the end of "The Vampire Diaries" Season 6 due to personal reasons. However, the producers of the series did not close the doors for the actress in case she decided to come back and reprise her role. Elena was not killed in the story just yet but was only placed under a conditional sleeping curse. This means that Dobrev can return in the series without the need of explaining her surprise comeback.

It can be recalled from Season 6 that Elena and her best friend, Bonnie Bennet (played by Kat Graham) were placed under a jinx by the show's former villain, Kai Parker (played by Chris Wood). The jinx would place Elena in a deep sleep and there would be no physical or magical means of waking her up from the cursed slumber. The only way to wake her up is through Bonnie's death. The main characters of the show have then decided to let Bonnie live the days remaining in her mortal life while Elena lies asleep in a protected coffin.

If Elena does return for season 8, it could mean that Graham's character will finally die. This could turn out right as the Parent Herald reported that Ian Somerhalder's character, Damon Salvatore, might kill the Bennet witch as he is possessed by a malevolent spirit. With Bonnie's death, Damon's girlfriend, Elena, will finally be awakened from years of slumber.

"The Vampire Diaries" executive producer and showrunner Julie Plec said in an interview with TV Line that she wants to see Dobrev returning for Season 8 to reprise the role of Elena. She also revealed that the show still has a big story untold for the character when Dobrev first left the show in Season 6.
