It has been highly speculated by the fans since the Season 7 finale of "The Vampire Diaries" that Nina Dobrev will be making a comeback in the series. Just recently, there are more clear signs that the actress is indeed going to return to the show, although it is not yet confirmed if she will reprise the role of Elena Gilbert.

Elena was the reigning main female protagonist of the CW's supernatural drama series from Seasons 1 to 6. After the Season 6 finale, Dobrev left the show and her character was placed in a cursed slumber which is very hard to break. The good news is that Dobrev is now more likely to return in the series with the eighth season. As reported by iTech Post, it is becoming more probable that Dobrev will be making a comeback, given that the recently revealed titles of the first three episodes of Season 8 rare pointing to her return.

Specifically, one of the titles of the eighth season is "Today Will Be Different," which is reminiscent to a note in Elena Gilbert's diary when her adoptive parents died in a car crash. This suggests that the fans will see more of Elena Gilbert in that particular episode, and Dobrev is almost confirmed to appear in the series.

However, even if Dobrev is confirmed to return to "The Vampire Diaries," it is still unclear if she will be playing Elena's character because there are rumors suggesting that the actress will be having a more villainous role instead. At first, many fans believe that Dobrev will be appearing as Katherine Pierce, a known doppelganger of Elena Gilbert. On the other hand, Movie News Guide reported that Dobrev will be playing a new role in the show. The name of Dobrev's new character in "The Vampire Diaries" is not yet revealed, but the online publication mentioned that it will be the "Evil one" that will torment Damon Salvatore's (Ian Somerhalder) life in Season 8. There are hints that Dobrev will be playing a sinister character during the Season 7 finale, when a voice similar to Elena's was heard inside the Vault where Damon was trapped in.
